East Africa Business Forum 2021: Doing business in Tanzania
In the backdrop of the East Africa Business Forum 2021, we held a session on Doing business in Tanzania'. The session was led by Christophe DARMOIS, CEO, Tanzania Petroleum Services & Chairman, French - Tanzanian Chamber of Commerce; Degratius MMASY, Tax manager, Mazars Tanzania and Aurélie LE PAGE, CEO, Lagardère Travel Retail Bevco Ltd.
Some takeaways from the session:
- Tanzania has a population of 55 M with 63% of the population being less than 24 years old. It is forecasted that in 2050 the country will have 130 Million inhabitants
- Tanzania’s economy is reliant on agriculture, which accounts slightly less than one-quarter of GDP and employs about 65% of the work force.
- The main export commodities in Tanzania are: gold, tobacco, cloves, coffee, cashew nuts, manufactured goods and cotton. The main import commodities on the other hand are: consumer goods, machinery and transportation equipment, industrial raw materials and crude oil.
- Tanzania has a favorable geographic position with its city Dar es Salaam housing the 2nd largest port in East Africa.
