Breakfast Meeting with MSF: The Humanitarian Landscape & Why it matters to business.
The realities of Medical Humanitarian Emergencies in Kenya.
Yesterday's ’s panel breakfast meeting with our Gold Member Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Eastern Africa was an eye-opening exploration into the realities of emergency medical response, humanitarian ethics and the importance of mental health in crisis zones.
Moderated by JOHN RIAGA, MPRSK, the panel featured insights from:
Jean de Cambry, Country Director, who defined emergencies from a medical lens and the logistical challenges MSF faces on the ground.
Sam Taylor, Director of Communications and Fundraising, who explored MSF’s communications approach and its 98% privately funded model.
Nancy Nyambura, Regional Staff Counsellor. Nancy gave insights into the psychological toll of emergencies on both affected communities and aid workers.
Key takeaways:
MSF teams deploy within 48 hours in a crisis.
Over 16 million medical consultations and 500,000 mental health sessions delivered globally yearly.
MSF operates on the principles of neutrality, Independence and Impartiality.
Mental health is not an afterthought, it is integral to emergency care, both for patients and staff.
In Kenya, regions like Marsabit and Turkana present unique challenges due to terrain, access and population dispersion.
Since its founding in 1971, MSF has remained committed to providing emergency medical care where it's needed most.
Thank you to MSF for the work you do and for reminding us that in the face of suffering, action must be both immediate and deeply human.
A special appreciation to our Partners and Members for attending and contributing to the success of this insightful discussion.
