Led by Patrick Ikimire, Partner & Head of the Intellectual Property & Technology Law Practice, the session unpacked the practical realities of copyright law and why every business, not just those in the creative industries, should pay attention.

Among the key insights shared:
- Copyright protects the expression of an idea, not the idea itself.

- Businesses often create valuable copyright assets every day, from marketing materials and software to reports, designs, manuals and training content, without recognising them as intellectual property.

- Clear ownership and proper documentation matter. Knowing who owns a work, how rights are transferred, and how those rights are managed can make all the difference when enforcing or commercialising your intellectual property.

- While copyright registration isn't mandatory in Kenya, it offers significant practical advantages, strengthening evidence of ownership, facilitating enforcement, and supporting licensing, investment and commercial transactions.

The session also sparked an engaging discussion on emerging issues, including copyright in the age of AI, ownership of works created in employment, licensing, and the importance of embedding intellectual property awareness into everyday business practices.
